PROFILE » History and development

FARMA Lifts was established in 1970 in Parma by Giovanni Ferrarini and in the first years of business a market for lift installation and maintenance was developed in a local context. From the very outset it was directed towards assembling and servicing Wengel lifts, which Ferrarini was an authorised fitter of in the Parma and province area. The maintenance and installation business, which was carried out directly by Giovanni and his brother Vittorio, allowed them to gain the experience they needed for the future marketing of their own brand lifts.

In 1980 FARMA started designing, building, assembling, and selling trademark FARMA lifts. The company rented a small warehouse in Martinella (Parma). In these years the company set up its first important contacts with overseas companies operating in the field of lift installation in countries like France and Egypt, which were to be the centre of the company's successive growth abroad.

In 1983 FARMA purchased a 1,000 sq.m. industrial warehouse in Crocetta (Parma) and moved its offices and production there.

In 1986 FARMA became a member of ANACAM – the National Association of Lift Construction and Lift Maintenance Firms - the most representative association in its category, which joins together over 500 companies from the lift industry.

In 1990 the founder of FARMA Giovanni Ferrarini was elected chairman of ANACAM, a position he was to continue to hold until 2004.

In 1993 FARMA opened its first overseas office in the Czech Republic in Prague.

In 1994 FARMA purchased a second industrial warehouse of 1,000 sq. metres adjoining the first.

In 1996 FARMA opened its second overseas office in France, in Cannes.

In 1997 FARMA gained the quality certification UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 from the renowned certification body “DNV” - Det Norske Veritas.

In 1999 FARMA opened its third overseas office in Romania, Bucharest. In 1999 FARMA gained quality certification for the “Module H” of the Lifts Directive (attachment 13), which enables their own technicians to test installed lifts.

In 2002 FARMA was awarded SOA certification up to category OS4 II, which enables companies to directly participate in tenders up to a maximum value of € 516,457.00. In 2005 the founder of FARMA Giovanni Ferrarini was elected chairman of EFESME - European Federation of Small and Medium-sized Lift Manufacturers – which, on a European scale, is the most representative association of small and medium-sized businesses in the lift industry.

In 2005 FARMA gained SOA certification up to category OS4 III, which enables companies to directly participate in tenders up to a maximum value of € 1,032,913.00
